Liberty's Call
"Four score and seven years ago," our sixteenth President said:
Brave loyal men ... ten-thousand fold, lay broken, lost, or dead...
They gave their lives, their utmost best...
Each one stood tall and met the test..."
His words were strong and heartfelt read
We'd long remember what he said....
A country defined, a nation born..
A fledgling eaglet from England torn...
That was then... and this was now.
And yet, the same. With solemn vow,
The tall man went on, his voice was strong
And though the speech did not take long,
His words of courage, faith, and love...
Were filled with guidance from above.
They urged the living to honor those dead
And spoke of our colors: blue, white, and red
Gettysburg, like Concord, Yorktown, Bull Run...
A new name continued what Fate had begun
Tied together with faith and Destiny's pledge.
This torn-apart country, poised on the edge,
Needed to look to her past and to feel
Liberty's strength and her power to heal.
Then, this man, with stove pipe hat in his hand,
Asked for patience and peace to cover the land.
"Government of, by, and for the people," he said...
And, then, he stopped and bowed his head...
"May it not perish from the earth..."
The words were true and filled with worth.
We learn from hallowed times, the past,
With memories to hold close and fast...
We need to cherish the men who have died
And bring our country together with pride.
So, together, look to our flag and see
The unmatched gift, our Liberty.
